[Novel] Cain (Jose Saramago)

Cain

“The history of mankind is the history of our misunderstandings with god, for he doesn’t understand us, and we don’t understand him.”

The Book of Genesis as retold through the eyes of a natural born skeptic who is not afraid to call God out on his bullshit. Don’t get a heart attack reading this one if you are religious, as — spoiler alert: the conclusion is that God is, most positively and malignantly, absolutely raving mad.

Positive: Negative:
Flowing, snarky prose More of a commentary on the more ridiculous passages of the Bible than a self-consistent story
Likable characters
Genuinely funny
Profound knowledge of the Old Testament
Thought provoking on the Jewish god, and the ancient culture that spawned it
