[Novel] King Solomon’s Mines (H. Rider Haggard)

King Solomon's MinesI wonder if this is what was basically equivalent to fantasy genre back in the nineteenth century. I was expecting to learn something about Africa, and its local culture, but instead I got an adventure book about some civil war of an obviously non-existent African tribe that might as well have consisted of trolls and goblins. The book does have its moments, but it also feels kind of, well, superficial compared to what I’ve grown to expect from the literature of the period.

Positive: Negative:
A cool adventure through an exotic land The whole thing reads like a superficial fantasy novel
Predictable, simplistic story and plot
Doesn’t feel like the novel cares much for cultural accuracy
